A Tribute to an Exceptional Friend and Founder

Our group originally started with one very special physician – his name was Masa Yukimoto. In 1994, he began as a single hospital-based doctor practicing at the Pacific Campus of California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. At that time, the field of Hospitalist medicine had not been officially named or recognized. Masa was a trailblazer and one of the founding fathers of Hospitalist medicine. He was also a very spiritual person and had an intrinsic ability to understand what makes for a great Hospitalist. He led by example, always focusing on his patients with deep compassion, being a friend and partner to our outpatient colleagues, and caring for each other through teamwork and camaraderie. For ten years, his leadership helped our group grow from a single physician to a three-campus program in San Francisco. At the time, our physicians were under an employed model with Inpatient Management Medical Group, which was owned by a single pediatrician.

Unfortunately, we lost Masa to cancer in 2005. Although he is no longer with us, the culture that he nurtured lives on with our group, and his legacy remains an integral part of who we are today. We will always be grateful for his mentorship and vision. It is with this special beginning that we were ultimately able to break free of our employed model and form our own physician-owned and led medical group, Pacific Inpatient Medical Group, in 2007 and make it what it is today. Our patients and doctors are the cornerstone and focus of our group. Our core values speak to the culture that makes us special: excellence, quality care, collegiality, teamwork, autonomy, and integrity. We attract physicians who want to be part of a leading-edge hospital-based physician group that practices in a sustainable manner and creates partnerships and community with those we serve.

We think of our group as one big family – taking care of each other while we care for others. We form collaborative partnerships with the hospital administrators we work with to improve the quality of care we deliver. We embrace physician wellness, making sure that we preserve the joy of medicine for our doctors. We also believe that physician-run organizations are the best way to help engage doctors and empower them to improve our healthcare system for our patients and ourselves.

Pacific Inpatient Medical Group (PIMG) is dedicated to fostering long-term, trusted relationships with primary care providers and specialists in our communities. We work to continuously improve our performance in order to deliver exceptional care to our patients and outstanding service to our referring physicians and hospital partners.

On the clinical side, we deliver high quality general medical care, specialty consultation, and surgical co-management services. We have expertise in Geriatric care and currently oversee a 34 bed Acute Care for the Elderly unit at our Mission Bernal Campus at California Pacific Medical Center. We work closely with our colleagues in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, and various surgical specialties to facilitate coordinated care throughout a patient's hospital stay. PIMG also operates in nursing homes to manage post-acute care services and provide our patients with safe transitions through various stages of illness.

We strive to continuously improve our practices, using Lean methodologies, so that we are consistently giving high quality, efficient, safe, and compassionate care to our patients. Above all, we believe our patients are best served by developing a strong physician-patient partnership and promoting collegiality and teamwork among our physicians.
